Electronics – Advanced Information Electrical power supply of MySat subsystems

Power is supplied to the MySat board (A) and transferred to the MySat board (B).
Attention! Power supply to the boards is only possible in the assembly!
Board ( A ) cannot work without board ( B ), and vice versa.

  • Make sure that the MySat boards are connected correctly!
  • Make sure that the jumper is installed on the DEPLOYMENT SWITCH connector of the MySat board ( B ).
Why can’t MySat be powered by solar panels?

When working with MySat training satellites, you may have noticed the lack of a useful effect from the solar panels. When working indoors, even in bright artificial light, the panels do not charge the battery, do not supply current to the MH CD-42 power controller, etc.
This operating condition is normal and does not indicate a malfunction.
Why doesn’t the MySat educational satellite run on solar panels?
The solar energy flux density in Earth’s orbit is much higher than on its surface, due to the absence of losses in the atmosphere. Real space satellites are able to obtain much more power per unit area of solar panels than is possible in ground-based tests.

At the same time, the radiation from artificial light sources is much lower than solar radiation, including on a winter or gloomy day (even if it visually seems otherwise). The maximum electric current that the panels can give even under bright lamps is insufficient for the correct operation of the electronic modules of the kit.

MySat has just two solar panels, with a total area of 128 cm². This is not much – real cubesats usually have more (due to covering more faces with panels, or implementing complex systems for deploying folded panels).

The solar panels included in the kit are actually capable of powering MySat – in limited mode.
This is possible in the summer, on a clear day, under direct sunlight.
To conduct the tests:

  1. Terminate the WiFi connection by disabling the use of the WiFi channel by sending the appropriate command (“SetWifi” → “No”).
WiFi communication is one of the most energy-intensive processes in MySat.
  2. Place MySat in direct sunlight. Position the satellite so that the sun’s rays hit the solar panels at a right angle.
  3. Observe changes in solar panel current by polling the INA3221 module, MySat voltmeter-ammeter.
Differences between MySat boards versions

The MySat Kit is designed to simulate the core functions of cube satellite (CubeSat) systems. At the same time, we continuously improve and expand the capabilities of the kit’s electronic components.

Below, you can check which special features are supported by your version of the MySat board (the version number is printed directly on the board):

  1. Possible problems with reading the true voltage values
  2. Use of SignalLED is not possible due to a design flaw in the printed circuit of MySat board (A)
  3. INA219 chip is installed instead of INA3221; code support is not available
  4. Only for components with I2C interface
